P3 August 2024

Welcome to our Primary 3 page. I will be updating the website often, so please keep checking for any new updates. The children have all settled into the new class and new routines. They are a great bunch, who are all very eager to learn.

Week Beginning 09.09.24

We have been continuing our topic Farm to Fork this week. The children have been learning about the different processes food goes through before we can eat it. The children particularly enjoyed learning about how bread is made and how milk is produced. I brought my bread machine into class and we made some ‘schoolmade’ bread and we even made our own butter! It was great fun to make our own food and then enjoy eating it. Some of the children recreated the process of harvesting wheat with Lego. What a great afternoon of learning.

Show and Tell

Every week 2 children will be picked to take part in Show and Tell. If they want to, they can fill their show and tell bag with goodies to share with the class. It has been a lovely way to get to know the children. Keep a look out for when your child brings their bag home on a Monday and then return the filled bag on Wednesday.

Join the Learning Event

The children are excited to invite you to our join the learning event. It takes place in school on Thursday 19th September at 9am in our Primary 3 classroom. We will be doing a writing lesson and you will be able to help your child create a fantastic story.

Maths Games Fun – 25/09/24

To celebrate Maths Week Scotland we had a a fun afternoon playing maths games. We worked in rotations playing different numeracy games – maths puzzles, hop scotch, snakes and ladders, symmetry games, and building playdough 3D shapes.

Farmer Keith Morton Visit

Continuing with our Farm to Fork visit, we had a wonderful visit from a real life farmer. Keith used to have 1000 sheep and hundreds of cows but now the only animals he has is 2 pet cats. He has been a farmer for over 50 years. Keith is now an arable farmer – he grows potatoes, wheat, oil seed and barley. He brought in different crops for us to look, feel and smell. These included, barley, peas, oil seed, beans, oats and wheat. We asked lots of questions and enjoyed hearing all about farming.

Ancient Egypt

We were very excited to start learning all about Ancient Egypt. We started of learning about different pharaohs. We learnt lots of amazing facts about Cleopatra and we drew our own Cleopatras. She wore fancy jewellery, so we made our own necklaces and pretended that they were made from gold and precious jewels.

Ancient Egypt fun continues…

We learnt about different Gods and loved pretending to act as different Gods and mummify people!!

Ancient Egypt – Pyramids

We were fascinated about why Pyramids had been built and what treasures were buried with the Pharaohs. We made our own triarama pyramids and added our own treasures.

Some of us loved pyramids so much we made our own out of different items found in the classroom.

Dinosaur STEM

Before we went to the Museum of Scotland for a visit and workshop about dinosaurs, we enjoyed a small topic about dinosaurs. We learnt about what different time periods there was, what the different types of dinosaurs ate and how they became extinct.

Telling the Time

We have been learning to tell the time using both analogue and digital clocks. We made our own paper plate clocks and we enjoyed some Spring sunshine and made a human clock, practicing o’clock and half past.

Museum Trip – A Dinosaur Adventure

We had a brilliant visit to the Museum. In the workshop we stomped like dinosaurs, sorted fossils and got to handle real fossils. We had a great time looking at all the animals in the Museum and we can’t wait to go back in April.

World Book Day 2025

We dressed up in our cosy pyjamas, read in different and funny places around the classroom and joined in with a live lesson.

Health Week 2025

We had lots of fun activities this week to celebrate Health Week. The activities included Basketball, Sports Day, Fire Safety, Bug Safari, Mud Tougher, Fitness Class, and Gymnastics. It was a brilliant week spent outdoors in glorious Spring sunshine.

Gymnastics at The WHEC

Assault Course

Basketball at The WHEC

Fire Safety Visit

The wonderful crew from Sighthill Fire Station on Calder Road came for a visit. They asked us lots of questions about fire safety in the house and then we were lucky enough to have a shot of the fire hose. We took it in turns to try and hit the cone, it was great fun. We then got to try on different pieces of uniform and sit inside the fire truck. The equipment was very heavy.

Bug Safari

Park rangers from Holyrood Park came to visit and teach us all about the different creepy crawlies that live in our school playground.

Fitness Class

A gym instructor visited and got us all moving about the classroom and keeping fit.

23.04.25 – Dynamic Earth Trip

We had a great trip to Dynamic Earth today. We went on the tour and time travelled back in time to the beginning of time! We saw volcanoes, icebergs, rainforests, inside of research ships and so much more.

23.04.25 – Dynamic Earth Rainforest Workshop

In this workshop we learnt about the different layers in the rainforest. We had a fun activity of sorting different animals into the correct layers of the rainforest: the emergent layer, the canopy layer, the understory and the forest floor. We then played a game matching the real mini beasts to the correct groups – there was millipedes, tarantulas, giant beetles and beautiful butterflies.

24.04.25 – Class Meeting

We had our first class meeting today – we are going to have one twice a month. We discussed what was going well, what wasn’t going as well and what we would like to get better at. The children set some challenges for the next two weeks, such as tying our own shoelaces, improving our art skills, and not shouting out in class so much. We already had a great success this afternoon when 1 child learnt to tie their laces – we are so proud of you!!! We also practiced upper and lower case letters today.

Emails Home

For this last term, I thought it would be nice to increase contact with home. I have added the children to a random name wheel and every Thursday I will pick a name at random. The children know that a email will be sent home about how their week is going. If your child has been picked, I will tell them and please share the email with them and have a chat about how their week has been.

Big Noise

The children have been learning how to keep the beat and keeping the rhythm. The children have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument such as a violin, viola, double bass and cello. They have been working so hard and have the most wonderful singing voices – such a musical class. Next week the children will be bringing their instruments home for even more practice.

Learning to tie our shoelaces

Continuing to develop life skills – so very proud of you both!

29.04.25 – Museum of Scotland – Ancient Egypt Explorers

We had a great trip to the Museum. We left nice and early so we could have extra time to explore the museum. We saw lots of animals, space rockets, old fashioned cars, the museum made out of Lego, Ancient Egypt relics, gemstones and so much more. We took part in an Ancient Egypt explore workshop and drew some ancient relics. We also explored the Egyptian gallery. It was a great day and a member of the public mentioned how well behaved the children were which was lovely to hear.

Outdoor Classroom Day – Thursday 8th May 2025

We enjoyed some outdoor learning today. We decided to create a science experiment and create our own bubbles. Not only is creating bubbles great for developing motor skills, it can also promote discussion around shape, size and suitability of various materials. This fun activity will help children make predictions and start to think scientifically.

The 6 Principles of Nurture

We have been learning about the 6 different principles of nurture and they are key to children thriving in school. The children have been learning about learning, wellbeing, being safe, transitions, behaviour and how language is communication.

Recent Learning in the Classroom

We have been practicing our times tables, measuring nature outside and finding the length and height of different items found in the playground. We are continuing Our City topic and naming different landmarks of Edinburgh.

STEM Challenge

To finish learning about height and length this term we enjoyed a STEM challenge. In small groups or working individually we all had the same resources. We had to either build the longest structure or the highest structure. Some of had brilliant teams and built structures as long as 3775cm!!!

Join The Learning

A big thank you to all the adults that came to visit the class and join in with our learning. Today we were using all our previous knowledge and skill to play and enjoy some maths games.

Summer Topic – Sea Pollution

We have been learning about water pollution in our Oceans. We have learnt different ways to save water, pick up litter and look after our environment. Plastic is damaging the environment and can hurt animals. We learnt that the Great Barrier Reef is larger than the country Italy and the size of 17 million football pitches.

Salt Water Science Experiments

We added different soluble ingredients to water to experiment whether items of different weights would float. We discovered that the more salt you add the more likely the item will float. This is due to water density and the salt making the water heavier.
