P6A Term 3 Update 2026

Term 3 has been a busy and exciting time in P6A. We have enjoyed a trip to Dynamic Earth, taken part in touch rugby lessons at Wester Hailes High School, participated in awesome workshops and learned loads in class.

Our Dynamic Earth trip

As part of our learning about natural disasters and space, we took a trip to Dynamic Earth. There we were able to tour the exhibits, learning about the formation of our planet, travelling through time and all around the world. We then took part in a workshop about space travel and learned all about how astronauts are able to do their jobs in space. We ended our day on a high with a show in the planetarium, presented by an astronomer. Some of the children said it was their favourite trip ever!

Art workshop

We have been lucky enough to welcome art students from Edinburgh College of Art to our class for two workshops this year. We had a great time working together to create collaborative art and to learn new techniques. We are really looking forward to later this term when we will go on two trips with the students!

The scale of the solar system

As part of our topic on space, we have been researching and learning about the size and scale of our solar system. First, we worked together to create scale drawings of the planets. Then, we used a roll of toilet paper to measure the distance from the sun that each planet is located at. We were surprised learn how close together the first four planets are – all found just 7 1/2 sheets of toilet paper from the sun – and how far apart the last four are. Neptune is 149 sheets of toilet paper away from the sun!

Electric Explorers

One of the highlights of term 3, was our visit from Generation Science. We had an electrifying show and workshop and learned all about how electricity is created, where it comes from and how we can store it. We finished by generating electricity to power robot bugs in a nail-biting race.

Winter Olympics

We have enjoyed cheering on Teams GB, Poland and Nigeria in the Winter Olympics. We have been fascinated by the freestyle skiing, figure skating and halfpipe snowboarding. Our highlight so far has been watching Matt Weston beat records in the skeleton. Skeleton racing inspired us to work collaboratively, testing different ideas and using our creativity and adaptability skills, to create skeleton tracks using PVC piping. Both teams worked well together and safely got their marble Olympian down their track!

Maths and numeracy

We have been working hard this term in maths and numeracy, focusing on multiplication strategies and building our quick recall of times tables. Our hard work is paying off as we recently were the number 1 ranked class of the day in Sumdog’s Edinburgh Maths Challenge, beating out classes from across Edinburgh! Well done P6A, I was so proud!
