Welcome Back Primary 4
It has been so lovely to see all the children back again after the summer holidays. We have some fantastic things planned for P4 and have already booked 2 trips over the next couple of months.
The children have already settled well and have remembered all our school routines.
Please remember to send your child in with a water bottle that can be refilled in school. Also, a waterproof jacket on days that looks like it might rain.
I am absolutely thrilled to be teaching P4 this year and together it will be marvellous.

Nature in Art – Lesson 1 – Andy Goldsworthy
We are enjoying an art topic about different artists that use nature within their work. Andy Goldsworthy is famous for his extraordinary work with natural materials. In a few weeks we will be visiting his exhibition in Edinburgh and we are very excited to see his work in real life. So, until then, we had a go at making our our art inspired by his work. We focused on swirls, circles, patterns, colour and different materials that we found in the playground.

Young Writers Art Competition
Last year in Primary 3, the class entered an art competition to design a superhero. I received the published book with some of the children’s art in it. We are so very proud of the children. If your child brought home a letter about this, then you can order your own copy. There will be a copy of the book if you wish to have a look when visiting the class.

Digital Learning
We are very lucky to have lots of iPads in the class this year. The children are able to log themselves onto devices and play different literacy or numeracy games. This is a great resource to enhance independent learning.

Show and Tell
We are carrying on doing show and tell in the classroom this year. The children will bring a little bag home at the start of the week and if they choose to participate, they can fill the bag with different items to share with the class.

Trip to the Money Museum on the Mound
We have enjoyed learning about money in the classroom and we were lucky enough to get to visit the Museum on the Mound. We had 3 fantastic workshops – 1. Design a banknote, 2. How money was stored in the olden days and 3. What was used as money in the olden days.

Join the Learning – Term 1
We had lots of adults come to join us with our learning. We were cutting out cardboard templates to make our Viking Longships – so the extra help was very much appreciated. We are loving learning about Vikings and can’t wait to make our Longships.

Show and Tell

Viking Longships
Wow we worked hard creating and building our Long ships. It took 5 different lessons to complete all the different elements of the ship – the mast, sail, oar holes, oars, rudders and the ship itself. We are very proud of the final result.

Museum of Scotland Trip – The Vikings
Following our term 1 topic on Romans and Vikings, we visited the Museum to take part in an amazing Viking Workshop. We got to look at lots of different items that the Vikings would have used, learnt how they traded, how they travelled and items they used when they were at home. In groups we had to collaborate with each other and guess the uses of different items.
Before we went to the Museum, we had time to visit Greyfriars Bobby – we had been wanting to do this for a while. We even visited his grave and laid some sticks on it. We had a great day and the children were incredibly engaged and were great representatives of the school.

Happy Diwali 2025
We have been learning about Diwali. We learnt why Diya’s are used and all about the story of Rama and Sita. We ended the afternoon with a fun lesson on Diwali dancing – it was great fun.
RSHP
As part of our Health and Wellbeing programme – RSHP (Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood) we have been learning about friendships. We have learnt how to nurture and maintain friendships and how to express different emotions. Primary 4 are an incredibly kind class and great supporters of each other – What amazing team work!!

Show and Tell

Term 2 Self Portraits
Using our new meta skill of creativity – we created our new self portraits. We are able to look back to the previous terms drawing, reflect and improve our new drawing.

Toys and Games Topic
We brought in our favourite toy from home or school and shared with the class. We used adjectives to describe our toys, and wrote a small passage describing the toy. We then presented this to the class.

Creativity Meta skill
Being creative means thinking about a task or problem in a different way, using your imagination.

Happy Halloween 2025
We had a great morning today celebrating all things spooky and autumnal. We carved pumpkins, iced biscuits, ate cake, watched a Halloween cartoon and did some Trick or Treating for our classmates. Lots of funny jokes were told.
“Knock, knock. Who’s there? Boo. Boo Who? It’s just a joke, you don’t have to cry about it!!”

Filmhouse Cinema Trip
We had an amazing trip to the newly refurbished filmhouse in town. We watched a Christmas film called Christmas Karma. This was a modern remake of the old classic ‘A Christmas Carol’. What a great film with very important messages about racism, kindness, immigration and modern life.

YMI – Youth Music Initiative
We have started learning how to play the ukulele. We were taught all the different parts of the ukulele and started to learn how to play a C note. It was very noisy but great fun. Can’t wait to watch the children improve their musical talents over the next few months. It was very funny learning new words in Scots, such as shoogly, lugs, help ma boab, birlin and haud yer wheest. We sang ‘heed, shooders, knaps and taes’ too. Thank you for the family members who came along to join our learning.

It’s beginning to look like Christmas in Primary 4
The fun and crazy season has begun with making decorations for the school fair and putting up the Christmas tree – The class looks very festive – even if the tree is decorated with capybaras!!!

Toys and Games Topic Continued
As part of our toy and games topic we have been learning about toys that can not only help neurodivergent children learn, focus and concentrate but are also fun for everyone. We made our own fidget toys – emoji squishies. They turned out really good.
